Onigiri, which means “rice ball” in Japanese, is a popular snack made from steamed rice often filled with savory ingredients and wrapped in nori seaweed. For our Dragon Ball Z themed Wrapped TREAT$, we wanted to take this classic comfort food and turn it into something sweet! Onigiri is typically eaten with your hand but we wanted to make a smaller version that you’d find in a bento box and those are eaten with chopsticks!

Our Sweet Onigiri puts a fun twist on traditional Rice Krispies treats, shaping them into onigiri-style rice balls for a playful dessert inspired by one of our favorite anime worlds. Feel free to print the featured image below to use for your gift!

Recipe
Makes 12+ onigiri depending on what size you cut them.
Ingredients
- 6 ½ cups rice cereal
- 1 ½ (15 oz) packages mini marshmallows
- 3 tablespoons butter
- Green Fruit Roll-Up (for “seaweed”)*
Instructions
- Prepare your pan: Line a large baking dish or tray with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
- Melt the butter: In a large pot, melt butter over low heat.
- Add marshmallows: Stir in the mini marshmallows and continue mixing until completely melted and smooth. Remove from heat.
- Mix in cereal: Add the rice cereal and stir until the mixture is evenly coated.
- Let it cool slightly: Allow the rice krispy mixture to cool slightly to where it is starting to stick together.
- Shape the onigiri: Lightly grease your hands with butter or nonstick spray. Scoop a handful of the warm cereal mixture and shape it into a triangle or rounded onigiri shape. Place on the prepared tray to cool completely and set.
- Add the “seaweed”: Once the treats are cool, cut the green Fruit Roll-Up into strips and wrap one strip around the bottom or center of each onigiri to resemble nori.
- Serve & enjoy! Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Note: For best results, work quickly when shaping the onigiri – Rice Krispies mixture firms up fast! If it gets too sticky, butter your hands or use a small sheet of parchment paper to help shape each one. You can use actual seaweed if you prefer instead of the fruit roll up.
