Save money (and a last-minute grocery trip!) by making your own powdered sugar at home. It’s an easy way to stock up in bulk for all your holiday baking – and the best part is, you’ll know exactly what’s in it.
While powdered sugar can technically be made with just granulated sugar, we recommend adding a little cornstarch to help prevent clumping and keep it light and fluffy.

Want to mix things up? Try these fun variations:
- Cinnamon Powdered Sugar → Blend in ½–1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (adjust to taste).
- Maple Powdered Sugar → Skip the regular sugar altogether and use maple sugar (dehydrated maple syrup) for a rich, natural flavor.
- Date Powdered Sugar → Perfect for a natural sweetener!
This recipe will cover the classic sugarcane powdered sugar version, but feel free to play with flavors once you’ve mastered the base!

Recipe
Yield: Flexible – make as much as you need! For example, if you want 4 cups of brown sugar, just multiply this recipe by 4.
Ingredients
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch*
Equipment
- Food processor or high-speed blender
- Silicone spatula
- Airtight storage container
- Small scoop* (recommended)
Instructions
- Decide your amount. Figure out how many cups of powdered sugar you need and multiply the base recipe as needed.
- Place your sugar and cornstarch into the blender or food processor.
- Combine. Let the mixture blend until the sugar and molasses are fully powdered.
- Store. Transfer to an airtight container. For easy use, keep a small scoop inside the container so it’s always ready to grab. Stored properly, your powdered sugar will stay fresh for months.
Note: Cornstarch is optional, but adding it helps keep your powdered sugar from clumping. Just be sure to add 1 tablespoon per cup of sugar.
