Cornbread Dressing

There’s nothing like a comforting, home-cooked meal to bring everyone to the table. Whenever I bake chicken or make smothered turkey legs, I always go for cornbread dressing over rice or mashed potatoes. There’s just something special about that sweet and savory combination that makes the whole meal feel extra cozy.

Our cornbread dressing is a family favorite – easy to whip up and full of flavor. It’s the perfect side dish that you can also customize with your favorite add-ins, whether it’s celery, raisins, or even a little sausage. It’s simple, satisfying, and always a hit!

Recipe

Serves 6–8, depending on portion size

Ingredients
  • 2 boxes Jiffy Cornbread Mix (8.5 oz each)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2 boxes stuffing mix (6 oz each, any flavor)
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup, 10.5 oz
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 5 cups chicken broth (store-bought or homemade)
  • Optional mix-ins: raisins, mushrooms, cooked ground sausage, shredded chicken or turkey, etc.
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and grease a round baking dish.
  2. Prepare the cornbread: In a large bowl, mix both boxes of Jiffy cornbread, eggs, and milk according to the package directions.
  3. Bake the cornbread: Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  4. Make the broth mixture: While the cornbread bakes, bring 3 cups of broth to a boil in a large pot with the butter and diced celery. Cook until the celery is softened. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Crumble the cornbread: While it’s still hot (but cool enough to handle), use a fork to break up the baked cornbread in the pan. Set aside.
  6. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F.
  7. Prepare the dressing mixture: In a large bowl, combine both boxes of stuffing mix. Pour the warm broth mixture over it and stir to combine.
  8. Add the crumbled cornbread and cream of chicken then stir until fully mixed. If the mixture seems dry, add more broth a little at a time until it reaches your desired consistency. This is also the time to mix in any extras like cooked sausage, mushrooms, or shredded chicken/turkey.
  9. Bake the dressing: Transfer the mixture back into the same baking dish and bake at 350°F until the top is golden and crispy, about 25–30 minutes.
  10. Serve warm with homemade gravy or cranberry sauce.

Note: You can use any flavor of dressing but we like to use the flavor we’re planning on having for the main course so turkey dressing with turkey wings and chicken dressing with chicken. You can also substitute the cream of chicken for cream of mushroom, cream of celery, etc. it’s up to you! We recommend using 1 box of cornbread stuffing mix and 1 box of another flavor stuffing mix.
