Kitchen Trash Mix

Every Christmas, my aunt-in-law makes a chex mix dessert called White Trash. It’s a mix of Rice Chex, M&Ms, and pretzels coated in white chocolate. Unfortunately, after Christmas, I wasn’t feeling well, so I wasn’t in the mood to make a big dessert or sides for our last holiday gathering. I took a look around the kitchen and thought, “What can I make with these ingredients?” That’s when White Trash came to mind.

However, I had a bunch of other ingredients I needed to use up, so I decided to get creative and make a chex mix version of Kitchen Sink Cookies, which I like to call Kitchen Trash Mix.

Kitchen Trash Mix is all about using Rice Chex and whatever random mix-ins you have on hand, coating them in your choice of chocolate and powdered sugar. You can throw in pretzels, chips, sprinkles—anything you like! In this recipe, I’ll share the ingredients I used, which were leftovers from making the ‘Buddy the Elf Cookies’ (a.k.a. kitchen sink cookies) and Snoopy Kibble (a.k.a Oreo Muddy Buddy) in the 2024 Christmas TREAT$ Box.

Recipe

Serves 24+ people depending on the serving size.

Ingredients
  • 6 oz Whole Wheat Rice Chex
  • 6 oz Corn Rice Chex
  • 4 oz butterscotch morsels
  • 2 oz Reese’s Peanut Butter morsels
  • 4 oz mini green and red M&Ms
  • 8 oz pretzels
  • 3 oz Goldfish Elf Maple Syrup Baked Grahams
  • 1 pack (12 oz) Wilton red candy melts
  • Christmas sprinkles
Instructions
  1. Start by grabbing a large bowl to combine all your ingredients.
  2. Pour the whole wheat Rice Chex and corn Rice Chex into the bowl.
  3. Add your mix-ins (everything except the sprinkles and candy melts). I used butterscotch morsels, peanut butter morsels, M&Ms, pretzels, and Goldfish Elf Maple Syrup Baked Grahams. Mix everything well to evenly distribute.
  4. Next, place your Wilton Red Candy Melts in a microwave-safe bowl.
  5. Melt the candy melts in the microwave, heating in 15-second intervals and stirring after each interval until fully melted and smooth.
  6. Pour the melted candy melts over the Rice Chex mixture and stir until everything is coated.
  7. Finally, add a sprinkle of festive sprinkles for a little extra sparkle!
  8. Store your delicious creation in an airtight container or Ziploc bag—or just dive right in and enjoy!

Note: Feel free to use any coating you like—almond bark, melted chocolate, or candy wafers. You can also choose any flavor of Rice Chex and add whatever mix-ins you prefer!
