Are you on the nice or naughty list this year? There’s an age-old saying that kids on the naughty list will find a lump of coal instead of presents on Christmas morning. While scrolling through Pinterest, I discovered this “Lumps of Coal” recipe from justapinch.com, which inspired me to create some edible coal for my nieces and nephews to enjoy.
I started by studying charcoal, determined to replicate its appearance using this recipe as my foundation. It’s similar to Rice Krispies treats but swaps in Oreos and some extra ingredients to achieve that coal look! Once I finished, I packed the treats into kraft paper bags to share with all the naughty family members!

Recipe
Yields 20-30 depending on the size you roll them.
Ingredients
- 1 pack of 13.29 oz Oreos*, crushed
- 1 bag of 10 oz marshmallows
- 4 tablespoons of butter, melted
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons of Edible Black Glitter
- Black Edible Spray (I use Sweet Tooth Fairy)
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet or container to hold the coals.
- Pour the entire pack of Oreos into a gallon storage bag.
- Use a rolling pin to crush the Oreos into small pieces, being careful not to turn them into powder.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until fully melted. Remove from heat.
- Stir the crushed Oreos into the melted mixture until well combined.
- Put on some gloves and roll the mixture into balls, placing each one on the lined baking sheet or container.
- Once all the Oreo balls are shaped, keep wearing the gloves to give them a more coal-like appearance.
- Transfer the Oreo balls to a large bowl.
- Sprinkle powdered sugar over them, ensuring each ball is coated.
- Using one hand to spray with black edible spray and the other to toss the balls, coat them evenly. Make sure to spray from a distance to achieve the desired color without overdoing it.
- Finish by adding some edible black glitter on top of the Oreo balls.
- Store the finished treats in an airtight container or share them in kraft bags for a festive holiday gift!
Note: While any chocolate sandwich cookie will work, Oreos are highly recommended for the best flavor.
