We’re not a fan of German Chocolate Cake at all but these cookies? Fire! We’re all about turning cakes into cookies and these were a hit at my in-laws on Thanksgiving! These are easy to make and (in my opinion) better than the cake version!
We used the Cake Mix Cookie base recipe we love from Beth at The First Year Blog, but we’ve elevated to give it that homemade cookie taste. After some trial and error we have our final product: German Chocolate Cake Cookies

Recipe
Yields about 10 cookies
Base Cookie Ingredients
- 1 box German chocolate cake mix
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cup shredded sweetened coconut
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans
- 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
German Chocolate Glaze Ingredients
- 1/3 cup German chocolate frosting
- 3 tbsp powdered sugar
- 1 tsp melted chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or spray them with nonstick spray.
- Make the cookie dough: In a bowl, mix the cake mix and flour. Then add the eggs, oil, vanilla and stir.
- Add your mix-ins: Fold in coconut, pecans, chocolate chips.
- Chill dough 20–30 minutes.
- Scoop 2 tbsp dough balls.
- Bake 10–12 minutes until edges are set.
- Cool on pan for 10 minutes before moving.
- Drizzle or brush with the German Chocolate Glaze.
Note: Make sure to cool your cookies completely to ensure the cookies don’t become too soft when serving. If your cookies do become too soft you can put them in the oven at 275°F for about 10 minutes to get them to harden up without ruining the glaze and keeping the cookie moist.
