Southern Style Cabbage

I always find myself caught in a friendly debate about which side is better -collard greens or cabbage. For me, cabbage wins every time! I’ve had it just about every way you can imagine: rolled, fried, steamed, and of course, my favorite – Southern Style Cabbage.

When fall rolls around, this dish is always in rotation. It’s simple, comforting, and the perfect match for baked chicken, smothered turkey legs, and Sunday Dinners. It takes a few ingredients (..and a little prep work) and the flavor payoff is pure comfort food perfection.

Recipe

Serves 6-8 people depending on your serving sizes.

Ingredients

Feel free to add as much of each ingredient as you like – this bowl is all about making it your own.

  • 1 head of cabbage, quartered
  • 4 strips of pork bacon, cut into medium pieces
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1½ to 2 cups homemade broth* (add more if needed)
  • 1–2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar (optional, for flavor)
Instructions
  1. Prep the ingredients: Cut the cabbage into quarters, slice the bacon into medium-sized pieces, dice the onion, and mince the garlic.
  2. Cook the bacon and onions: In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the bacon until it begins to render fat. Add the diced onions and cook until they’re soft and translucent.
  3. Add the cabbage: Stir in the cabbage and toss to coat it in the bacon fat and onions. Let it cook for a few minutes to soak up all that flavor.
  4. Add broth and simmer: Pour in 1½ to 2 cups of chicken broth (just enough to partially cover the cabbage). Cover and bring to a gentle boil.
  5. Season and add vinegar: Once boiling, add the minced garlic and a splash of apple cider vinegar for a subtle tang. Stir, cover again, and reduce the heat.
  6. Cook until tender: Simmer for about 25–30 minutes, or until the cabbage reaches your preferred tenderness.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve it up as a side for your favorite comforting meal!

Note: Store-bought broth works just fine, but homemade broth adds an extra layer of rich flavor. For a little kick, sprinkle in a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes before serving.
