Similar to the Kitchen Trash Mix, this recipe was a last-minute creation after I checked out the ingredients I had left. I had rice cereal, marshmallows, dark chocolate morsels, and hot cocoa mix from our 2024 TREAT$ Box, so I thought, why not take the classic Rice Krispies treat and give it a twist? Hot Cocoa Krispies, of course!
This recipe elevates the classic Rice Krispies treat by adding the rich, chocolaty, and marshmallow gooeyness of a warm cup of hot cocoa.
For an extra special touch, you can even add graham crackers to make S’mores Krispies! Hmm.. that gives me an idea…. stay tuned!

Recipe
Makes 12+ bars depending on what size you cut them.
Ingredients
- 6.5 cups of Rice Cereal
- 1.5 packages of mini marshmallows, 15 oz
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3/4 cup of homemade hot cocoa mix*
- 4 oz of dark chocolate morsels
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low-medium heat, making sure the temperature is not too high to avoid burning the marshmallows.
- Add 10 oz of marshmallows (1 package) to the butter and stir until melted.
- Stir in your homemade hot cocoa mix* until fully combined.
- Next, add the rice cereal, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to ensure everything is coated.
- Then, fold in the remaining mini marshmallows and dark chocolate, letting them melt slightly into the mixture.
- Pour the rice cereal mixture onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Allow the mixture to cool, then cut into squares of your desired size once it’s set.
- Store your delicious creation in an airtight container, serving dish, or Ziploc bag—or just dive right in and enjoy!
Note: You can use store-bought hot cocoa mix, but I promise that the homemade version I use takes the flavor to a whole new level. Feel free to use any rice cereal or chocolate you prefer, though I find that dark chocolate really enhances the flavor, especially since the hot cocoa mix is essentially milk chocolate.
